One Marion Don’t Stop No Show…
I don’t know Marion Jones. Never seen her in person even. The closest I’ve come to meeting her was an interview I did a few years ago with then-husband Tim Montgomery. Even without the immediate connection though, I always liked her. I fondly remember watching her ball at UNC in the 90s and run laps around the competition at the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney.
Truthfully, a lil’ something ached inside of me the other day while I watched her confess to taking steroids from the courthouse steps. The tears and trembles in her voice seemed genuine. But then again, they always seemed genuine, each time over the past three or four years she held a press conference to confess her innocence about drug usage. Damn!
So, now that Jones’ fabled Olympic career has turned into fool’s gold, where does the casual track and field fan turn and cheer? There are a couple of names worthy of your attention, but none are more deserving than Allyson Felix, America’s brightest female sprint hope going into the ’08 Beijing Games. A 21-year-old elementary education major at the University of Southern California, Felix is all about schooling the competition in the 200M, 400M and 1,600 relays.
"Allyson Felix is phenomenal," said fellow U.S. track star Sanya Richards, after the LA native’s stellar showing at the 2007 World Championships. "She's proven that this year—that she's fast, strong, everything. We'll have a great rivalry in all the sprint events, and when I'm 100 percent healthy, I'll be an even better competitor for her."
The sports world simply adores her. Adidas loves her, too. From the couple of interviews I’ve seen with Allyson, I completely understand why. The young lady runs with amazing grace and walks with a likable air. She actually kinda reminds me of how I felt when I was first introduced to Marion Jones a decade ago. I just hope my heart isn’t broken by deceit and alligator tears this time around the track.

A few years ago, Vince McMahon produced a dicumentary on the life of Superstar Billy Graham. In this dvd, Graham tells his story of how his superhuman physique has ultimately lead to ongoing medical problems to include the collapse of his spine, and a liver transplant. The side effects are known to these athletes before they start with these "cycles", yet the accolades seem more important to their long term health and their legacy. It's sad, yet it is self inflicted, so I cannot feel sorry for Marion Jones, Lyle Alzado, or others, I choose to reserve that for the victims effected by Chris Benoit. - David Sapolis
