Philly Futility
This past Saturday, the Philadelphia Phillies lost 6-3 to Colorado. To the everyday sports fan, the three-run thump was just another three-run thump. A couple of Rockies had multi-hit games and Philly shortstop Jimmy Rollins hit his 100th career home run. Beyond that there wasn’t a whole lot else to Philadelphia’s 44th defeat of the seas—but hold up one second here. 44 loses this year gives them 601 since the start of the 2000 season. And you know what total that gives them since the franchise’s inception, right? 9,999! Yep, with Philadelphia’s next loss –the team whopped Colorado 8-4 on Sunday- the organization (called the Blue Jays and Quakers at one time) becomes the first in any of the major sports to record 10,000 defeats. Since the team’s first failure on May 1, 1883, it’s had 14 100-loss seasons and has won just one World Series title. With two big series against the Cardinals and Dodgers occurring right after the all-star break, I know that milestone defeat will happen sooner rather than later. For Philly’s sake, I just hope I’m the only one who notices…
