TOP TEN- 9-05-06

Everybody has a Top 10. NS is no different. But rather than focus just on college football or Major League Baseball, we’ve decided to throw every sport –frisbee golf, LPGA, miniature golf- into the same pool and simply fish out the best athletes/teams each Monday. Let the debating commence…

  1. Tiger Woods- Forget five straight PGA wins. The fact the man has been No. 1 on the NS poll for three straight weeks is what’s really nuts!
  2. Spain Basketball- Even with team leader Pau Gasol nursing a bum left foot on the bench, Espana proves its world domination on the hardwood.
  3. New York baseball- Okay, so you’re telling me A-Rod’s the toast of the Bronx now? At least the city’s been consistent with its adoration for the Mets all year.
  4. Sacramento Monarchs- Yolanda Griffith’s royal court is one win away –Detroit may take it five games though- from beginning a new dynasty in the WNBA.
  5. Division I-AA football- Maybe you didn’t notice because you were still gasping from Montana State’s upset over Colorado, but tiny Richmond shocked Duke over the weekend, too.
  6. Ohio State Buckeyes- The No. 1 team in the country looked good in its tune-up game for No. 2 Texas this coming Saturday.
  7. Andre Agassi- The old guy did all he could (lost in the 3rd round of the U.S. Open) to extend his farewell tournament as long as possible.
  8. Detroit Tigers- So what they’re 4-6 over their last 10? Until the Tigers fall from first place in the AL Central (won’t happen), they’ll keep a spot here.
  9. Matt Kenseth/Jimmie Johnson- Isn’t their game of “I’m No 1…No, I’m No. 1!” in the Nextel Cup sooooo cute?
  10. USA athletics- We take home the bronze in basketball and qualify for the ’08 Summer Games in baseball. Not great but not too bad either. Kinda like getting a kiss from your really cute fourth cousin.

Almost Made The Cut: Tennessee Vols (embarrassed then-No. 9 Cal), Ryan Howard (Philly record 53 homers and 134 RBI), Oakland A’s (6 ½ lead in the AL West)

Three WORST: Milwaukee Brewers (1-9 over last 10), Temple Owls (a Division 1-high 13 straight losses) and this asshole here
